Apart from my problems in getting ldap to work, I have this question:
I would like for most users to authenticate via ldap, but I would like to still have a few normal owl users. Will that work? That is, if the username entered is not a valid ldap user, will owl use normal authentication?

Owl will use what ever authentication is set for that user, it it is set for LDAP, then owl tries that authentication Only.
You can have different types of Authentication for Different users.
